WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFICIAL MECHANISM?

Several beneficial mechanisms are associated with intermittent exposure to hyperbaric doses of oxygen. Either alone, or morecommonly in combination with other medical and surgical procedures. These mechanisms serve to enhance the healing process of treatable conditions.

  1. HYPEROXYGENATION
  2. NEOVASCULARIZATION
  3. Hyperoxia enhanced ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY
  4. DIRECT PRESSURE
  5. Hyperoxia-induced VASOCONSTRICTION
  6. ATTENUATION OF REPERFUSION INJURY

About the treatment

The number of treatments you will require varies between patients, depending on your particular problem. Some may only require 2 and others 30 treatments.

Although you will need to attend regularly, treatment times may vary due to emergency patient treatments. The duration of each treatment is between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on the condition.

How long will each treatment take?

One session usually takes 90 – 120 minutes depending on the case. Depending on the conditions, a total of 10 – 30 treatments may be needed.

What to expect?

There are 3 stages of treatment in one session:

1. Compression

  • This is part of the treatment when pressure is applied to the hyperbaric chamber.
  • The pressure will not fall on the body but most likely will be felt by the ears, similar to that when descending in an aircraft.
  • This is also the time when the patients have to clear their ears to prevent trauma. With effective equalization, as coached by the nurse present, you will not have any discomfort.
  • The temperature inside the chamber will increase for a few minutes.

2. Maintenance of Pressure

  • This is when the chamber has reached the treatment pressure, the pressure is maintained.
  • The duration of this phase is according to the treatment table prescribed by the hyperbaric physician.
  • Patient should not feel any discomfort during this period.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are uncommon. They relate to the increase in pressure (ear or lung barotrauma) or the use of increased amounts of oxygen (CNS or lung oxygen toxicity). Some patients may also experience visual changes that cause them to become more near-sighted ; this is usually temporary and should disappear within 1-2 months of ceasing therapy. Your doctor will discuss these prior to your commencing treatment and at any time you are concerned

3. Decompression

  • This is when the pressure will decrease.
  • It is important to make sure that the patients do not hold their breath during this session.
  • You will feel your ears "popping" during this phase.
  • The temperature in the chamber will decrease for a few minutes.

ArtAssist Device

The ArtAssist device is a recently introduced home therapy developed to increase arterial blood flow. Clinical studies have shown ArtAssist compression to triple blood flow and dramatically increase painfree walking distance. There are no known side effedts.

ArtAssist Device is recommended for:

  • Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease (narrowing of blood vessel)
  • Diabetic Foot Ulcers-Arterial Ulcers
  • If you are experiencing pain while walking and relief when you rest.
  • Rest Pain : If you experience constant pain, even at rest
